We came, we saw, we . . . had a blast! AmiWest and the
associated AmigaOS Progarmming Seminar were really a hit with the
attendees. As Lyle Hazelwood said several times, "You guys really know how
to throw a party!" Thanks, Lyle! We also got good online feedback from our
broadcast (courtesy of Bill Borsari and the AmiWest Broadcast crew). We
are adding new coders for the Amiga community and new involvement for our
Amiga alternative presence.
So you may have missed it this year? We're already on for next year!
We will announce dates and (another) venue later on this week. That way,
you can start planning now to attend AmiWest 2013!
AmiWest 2013 is on the way! So be sure to make your plans to attend AmiWest 2013, the Amiga and Amiga alternatives show on the West
Coast of the United States of America! It's all happening at our new
venue, to be announced soon! Come see the latest in Amiga hardware and
software in October of 2013. Attend our second annual AmiWest Programmers
conference in conjunction with AmiWest. And watch this blog for breaking
news of AmiWest 2013 as it happens! You don't want to miss it! Organized

After a few delays, the AmiWest 2012 AmigaOS "C"
Programming Conference completed the first day under the
leadership of Hyperion Entertainment developer team lead Steven
Solie. Three other presenters make up the conference team:
Bill Borsari, Lyle Hazelwood and Paul Sadlik.
Participants are following the intructional outline given on
the Hyperion website developer blog (http://hyperion-
entertainment.biz) under the heading AmigaOS Links, AmigaOS
Documentation Wiki,Tutorials, AmiWest 2012. This material is
being edited "hot" as the conference proceeds with questions
from the participants influencing what is posted. It's a very
interactive process.
We are currently recording the sessions and hope to have
something available to those who could not come in the near
future, governed mostly by the quality of the recording and the
time spent on editing and enhancing it. Among the participants
are several very experienced "C" coders. The intent is to make
the material available to interested people in the interests of
developing a core of coders for AmigaOS.

Those of us close to AmiWest are always excited about what will happen at
the show. But why should you come to join us? We believe there are
compelling reasons to be here in person at AmiWest 2012. So we are going
to make the case for your personal attendance and, hopefully, your
persuasion of at least one other person to attend with you.
Here's a countdown of our most compelling reasons to attend, from #10 down
to #1. Join us now as we countdown to AmiWest 2012, October (18)19-21,
2012, at the Ramada Plaza Cal Expo, 2600 Auburn Blvd., in Sacramento, CA.
REASON # 1: COME TO AMIWEST 2012 TO EXPERIENCE AMIWEST
SURPRISES!
AmiWest is always full of surprises! Often, these surprises
develop at the show with little or no advance notice. For example,
Carl Sassenrath's 2010 visit to sell Amiga prototypes and other memorable
pieces was made on two days' notice. Brice Nesbitt's visit that same year
was unannounced, as was Michael Battilana's visit.
If you aren't here, you can't experience those surprises first-hand.
All you'll get is a mention in a show report, or perhaps an IRC channel
note. If you're here, you can actually talk to people who have made and
are making news for Amiga
And those surprises will occur, with or without you. Make it
your priority to be here and publish your own take on our surprises for
2012. The after-hours conversations and Amiga friends you'll make are
worth coming for the first time and returning year after year.
So be sure to make your plans to attend AmiWest 2012, the Amiga show on
the
West Coast of the United States of America! It's all happening at the
Ramada Plaza Cal Expo, 2600 Auburn Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95821. Local
phone: 916-487-7606. Come see the latest in Amiga hardware and software

Codebench, the Amiga programming environment, will be represented at
AmiWest 2012! Paul Sadlik will be extending the Hyperion Entertainment
presence with his Codebench table. Following is a descripton of Codebench
from their site.
Programming, in any language, can lead to a large number of text files
containing source code. The bigger the project, the more files are usually
involved, and keeping track of which file contains what can be a nightmare.
So what is there that can help...?
Designed purely for use on the latest version of AmigaOS, CodeBench is a
management system that is modular to allow adaptation to various
programming languages.
Utilizing a "project" based system, all files are grouped together by type
and are easily accessible from the Project Window. Editing is a simple
matter of selecting the required file and it is opened in the built-in
editor. Creating the finished article from the project is a one click
event from the toolbar.
The Detailed View section gives a much more in-depth explanation of all the
various parts and windows, but as an overview, listed below is a basic
description of the more important features of CodeBench.
- Button driven Toolbar
- Drag'n'Drop
- Integrated Project window
- Automatic build script generation
- Fully integrated editor
- Integrated Clip Manager
- "Quick-Link" window
- Integrated Build window
- Asynchronous build process
- Comprehensive Asynchronous Search
- Programmable keyboard Macros
- Recent List
- User menus
- Customizable display
- Locale friendly
- Dedicated scratchpad
- Fast menu links
- Context-sensitive menus and popup's
- Context-sensitive Help system
- "Help-as-you-Type" system
- Foreign Project Import
- ARexx port
- "Auto Indentation" system
- "Change notifications"
- "Repository" support
- "AutoDoc" Viewer
Wow - that's quite a list of features! Come to see Codebench
demonstrated and talk with Paul about how he has used and is using
Codebench to manage programming projects.

REASON # 2: COME TO AMIWEST 2012 TO GET IN ON THE LATEST AMIGA
DEVELOPMENTS.
Every year for the past 15 years, developments that have affected the
Amiga community have been announced. This year is no exception.
Developments in hardware, software, and development choices will be
announced at AmiWest 2012 by the people involved in those events.
The only way to actually talk to Amiga newsmakers is to be here in
person. They are real people who are most willing to discuss what they
are bringing to pass for the Amiga community in the near term as well as in
the future.
You just can't do that on an IRC channel. The excitement of
being here and hearing about the news first-hand is something you can't
replicate online. No amount of interviews or posts can substitute for your
personal and in-person experience.

REASON # 5: COME TO AMIWEST 2012 TO SUPPORT AMIGA EXHIBITORS
BECAUSE THEY SUPPORT YOU!
Business conditions these days are tentative and getting more so, to
say the least. The same is true for Amiga exhibitors and vendors as it
is in the rest of the world economy. Even though Amiga users are loyal, we
still need to support those whose business it is to keep supplying what we
need to keep our Amigas going. If we don't support them, they may not be
able to continue in business.
Indeed, this disappearance of vendors is one of the reasons why
AmiWest came into being in 1998, 15 years ago. There used to be two
Amiga shops here in Sacramento that we supported in every way we could.
However, when Commodore Amiga went bankrupt in the mid-90's, these shops
did well to survive as long afterward (about 5 years) as they did. Forced
to close their doors, our Sacramento Amiga Computer Club had to find a way
to bring the store to us once a year. And thus the first AmiWest show was
born.
Now we have vendors who can serve the needs of Amigans everywhere on
the planet. However, they still need our support -- and even more than
ever! Now is not the time to back away from spending a little on Amiga to
be sure that your machines continue to run and stay updated with the
latest in hardware and software. If all of us spend a little (and some of
spend a lot), our vendors can stay in business. All of us benefit.
Come to AmiWest with money in your pocket (and on your bank card) to
spend on upgrades, updates, and new stuff.
So be sure to make your plans to attend AmiWest 2012, the Amiga show on

REASON # 6: COME TO AMIWEST 2012 TO FIND ANSWERS TO YOUR AMIGA
QUESTIONS IN PERSON.
Do you ever wish you could just talk to someone in person who might know
the answer to your Amiga questions? This is another good reason to
come to AmiWest in person. Here you will find, concentrated in a single
location, many users both expert and common who have Amiga expertise to
share. And it's not only the experts developers and exhibitors who have
knowledge to share. Often a user just like yourself has searched out and
implemented an answer to just the question you have.
Indeed, many long-time attendees continue to come to renew
acquaintances just for these reasons. AmiWest attendees are very
willing to share their knowledge both during and after show hours with
people who want to interact and share what they know. In the process, many
problems are solved and much is learned by both parties. This
interactive process over a period of days is also a great reason to stay at
our hotel to be part of such discussions whenever they happen.

REASON # 4: COME TO AMIWEST 2012 TO MEET AND GREET AMIGA
PERSONALITIES.
You never know who is going to attend AmiWest! We always have
a
few surprise guests in addition to the announced exhibitors and presenters.
These people are, many times, key people in the development of Amiga.
We invite many of them to attend every year. People like Carl
Sassenrath, inventor of Amiga, and Dale Luck, Amiga graphics guru. RJ
Mical is also always welcome, as is anyone who has ever had anything to do
with Amiga development, design, or production. Brice Nesbitt, AmigaOS
developer and maintainer from OS 1.2 thru 3.5, attended AmiWest 2010.
Michael Battilana of Amiga Forever fame was also our guest that year.
Even as I write these names, I know I'm leaving someone out. Of course,
our current luminaries like Steven Solie, team lead developer for AmigaOS,
Lyle Hazelwood, Amiga software developer, Trevor Dickinson, principal in
A-EON, and Matthew Leaman, principal at Amigakit, will be among our regular
exhibitors this year as well. And we can't leave out our very creative
organization man and broadcaster Bill Borsari and his team, along with Paul
Sadlik who assists us with our show floor layout and his Amiga expertise as
a seminar presenter. Then there's Dave Morris, moderator on Amiga.org and
MorphOS.com, one of our most enthusiastic supporters, working behind the
scenes as well as at the show to make AmiWest even better every year.
But you won't be able to meet and discuss with any of them if you
don't come in person to the show. Watching the broadcast on the
internet just doesn't get you up close and personal like being here does.
Don't sit at home and wish you could be here. Put plans in place to come
to AmiWest NOW!

Humanity is a wonderful thing. Sometimes people do make
mistakes and that only proves that we're human. So we'll fill
in the gap between the reasons that one of our readers pointed
out.
We regret that some of our readers don't share our
requirements for common decency in the comments. Profanity
is not allowed and simply reveals the true abilities of
those who use it for premeditated effect. It has none here.
So please refrain from profanity in your comments. I'm sure
that our readers typically have a wider vocabulary to use.

REASON # 3: COME TO AMIWEST 2012 TO ENABLE YOUR AMIGA!
Our theme this year is enable:Amiga! We are dedicating the show
to enabling your Amiga to perform as it never has before. To this end we
are presenting two demonstrations of Amiga software on AmigaOS4.x on
Saturday and on Sunday.
On Saturday, a demonstration will be presented using Getting the Most
From Your Amiga, a freeware compilation by Daniel Hutchinson. We will
address some of the lesser-known aspects of this compilation and have the
compilation itself available as a giveaway. Downloading and providing this
collection has proven to be a significant piece of work and, we believe,
will repay your effort in attending AmiWest. Using the freeware in this
collection will enable access to iTunes from your desktop, allow you to
manage assigns without editing your startup sequence, program keys on your
multimedia keyboard, and other functions designed to truly enable your
